Hola!! Can you believe it? IndiMex is nearly 1 year old!! So we’re having a party … a FIESTA!!!

Happily, our anniversary falls almost on the date of Mexican celebrations, Cinco de Mayo (5^th May). So first, un poquito of information about Cinco de Mayo.

The date commemorates the Mexican army’s unexpected victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on 5^th May, 1862. It is not, as the U.S. sometimes promotes, Mexico’s Independence Day which is actually celebrated on 16^th September.

Unfortunately, the victory was short-lived and just one year later, thirty thousand French troops were able to defeat the Mexican army, capture Mexico City and Emperor Maximilian I became ruler of Mexico. Leadership battles continued over the following years but the celebration of Cinco de Mayo lives on to this day.

A time for celebration for Mexicans all over the world

Cinco de Mayo events occur globally, wherever populations of Mexicans reside. Celebrations emphasise Mexican cuisine, culture and music and the general ‘joie de vivre’ that goes along with being Mexican. Revellers dress in colourful costumes, there are always countless sombreros in crowds, Mexican food is the order of the day and alcoholic margaritas are ‘the’ drink (maybe a few tequila shots and Coronas too).

We will have staff in Indian/Mexican costumes – we’re thinking hybrid costumes – and there’ll be loads of fun. Think turbans, sombreros and saris. Think mariachi music. Think Bollywood music (hey we are INDI-mex, after all!). Think tacos, nachos, enchiladas and holy guacamole!
